Call of Duty: World at War

With the release of COD: World at War set for November of this year, recent shows by Activision reveal that there will be a couple of new missions for the game. These differ quite a bit from the typical levels previously played on early versions of Call of Duty developed by Treyarch. While most gamers are used to chaotic scenes of gunfire, explosions detonating everywhere and soldiers scampering all over the screen, the new missions provide for a change of pace to provide a bit of a reprieve after some hard fought ground battles.

One of the first new missions places your character onboard the PBY Catalina, a large fighter plane engaged in battle against the Japanese in the Pacific (naturally during World War II). There are number of gun positions that are unmanned and you have to move quickly between each position and fire upon the enemy as directed by the onboard pilots. As you change position the weapons also change from .50 calibre machine guns to two powerful .50 calibre turrets at the front of the plane. Given that the Japanese ships are thin-skinned, you can easily wreak havoc especially by targeting explosives onboard. Although this is not a very challenging aspect of the game, it does reflect earlier fighting scenarios from Call of Duty IV: Modern Warfare and Call of Duty: United Offensive.

The second mission, demonstrated by Treyarch at a recent E3 conference, takes place in Europe at the Russian Front. During this phase of the game the Germans are retreating and you control the Red Army. By providing this mix of gameplay, Treyarch is taking a step forward to provide a new experience for this established series.
