Watchmen coming to Gaming and Film

Deadline Games, the Danish studio that created Chilli Con Carnage, Total Overdose, and Faith and a .45, is now developing a series of games that will act as prequels to the story based on Alan Moore’s Watchmen graphic novel. Moore’s Watchmen is to be released on film by Warner Brothers Pictures in March 2009. The episodic, prequel games will be released about the same time as the film’s release.

The games will be downloadable in an episode format and will be released for the Xbox 360, Playstation 3 and PC. The games are classified as action-brawler games. They will chronicle the time period prior to the comic’s and film’s story line when superheroes Rorschach and Nite Owl formed a vigilante team, before masked heroes were outlawed. The film itself will be set in 1985 in the alternative universe in which the Watchmen are a retired force while the Cold War continues to threaten world peace. It begins with Rorschach investigating the murder of one of the Watchmen superheroes.

In the game, players can choose to be either Rorschach or Nite Owl and the character will either be controlled via AI or as a split screen co-op play. The two episodes to be released initially will develop the background stories of the characters in the comic and film and will also introduce new opponents into the story line. The games will be setup as third-person action games and will be setup strictly during the night time. They will be M-rated and will have contributions from the Wolverine creator, Len Wein and Watchmen illustrator Dave Gibbons.
